Q&A with DC Mohaned Bahr

What inspired you to join the alignAI project?

The project’s unique interdisciplinary approach and its ultimate aim of aligning AI with ethics and human values are the two main factors that caught my interest. Over many years, humans have strived to define and advocate for their rights, principles and values, which are enshrined in various human rights charters. As a judge responsible for safeguarding these rights and principles, I observed that although AI technology has increased human productivity and advanced many sectors of the economy, it has often overlooked human preferences and disregarded rights such as explainability and fairness. Therefore, I wanted to be part of this project and contribute to its interdisciplinary approach as a member of a wide network of doctoral candidates from across the social sciences, humanities and technical disciplines, working to achieve this ultimate aim by developing studies and delivering legal recommendations that can support the need for legal guidelines and toolkits.

What is the focus of your research within alignAI?

I will bring a legal lens to the project by researching the current European and international AI legal frameworks and regulations in order to develop legal recommendations for regulating large language models (LLMs) in the real-world context of AI governance. Additionally, I will work closely with other doctoral candidates, helping them translate the lessons learned and values identified into practical outputs that support value-aligned development and responsible innovation.

What excites you most about working at the intersection of AI and law?

I’m excited to integrate myself into an interdisciplinary team, apply my legal expertise to the use-case projects and learn from the knowledge and perspectives of my fellow DCs. Finally, I hope to bring law to the forefront of this technology, ensuring that it keeps pace with the rapid evolution of AI and LLMs.

How do you see interdisciplinary collaboration shaping the future of AI, whether in your project or further?

It will bring together the knowledge and expertise of specialists from different scientific fields to collaboratively align human values and principles with the perspectives of developers, big-tech companies, regulators and end-users involved in the AI lifecycle. The goal is to ensure that “trustworthy-AI” is achieved to serve the best of humanity and also promote fairness and trustworthy AI factors.

If you had to explain your research to a friend outside academia, how would you describe it?

I would say that the law is intended to walk hand-in-hand with AI to cope with the rapid evolution of this technology. Thus, I will be researching the current European and international legal framework and recommendations to help bridge identified gaps and translate findings and learned lessons into legal recommendations, guidelines and toolkits for start-ups working in value-aligned LLMs.

Where can people follow your work?

I will be sharing the knowledge I gained, workshops attended, conferences and seminars I participated in and publications with other doctoral candidates throughout my whole alignAI journey on my LinkedIn page.
