Q&A with DC Baihong Bao

What inspired you to join the alignAI project?

My ultimate motivation as a researcher is to augment human intellect through technology — a vision inspired by Doug Engelbart that deeply resonates with me. His philosophy drives my pursuit of knowledge that enhances human intelligence through technology. I believe the alignAI project offers a valuable opportunity to explore how AI can positively integrate into people’s lives, steering this powerful technology toward a more human-centred future.

What is the focus of your research within alignAI?

My research will focus on developing a user-centric AI evaluation framework that will triangulate subjectively with objective metrics for large language models (LLMs). Three main use cases will be covered: education, mental health and online news consumption.

What excites you most about working at the intersection of AI and human-computer interaction (HCI)?

AI technology is already shifting the paradigm of HCI. As a researcher, I’m deeply interested in understanding how humans engage with AI — and how we can translate this emerging “superpower” into tools that amplify human capabilities in a truly human-centred way.

How do you see interdisciplinary collaboration shaping the future of AI, whether in your project or further?

I believe keeping an open mind and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration is essential — especially when it comes to understanding perspectives from other fields. As AI becomes increasingly integrated across diverse domains, it’s vital for me as an HCI researcher to step into others’ shoes, understanding their insights and hands-on experiences. The alignAI project presents a valuable opportunity to synthesise ideas and draw conclusions through the lenses of technology, psychology, ethics and design.

If you had to explain your research to a friend outside academia, how would you describe it?

I’m like a quality inspector for AI. I focus on how well LLMs support people in a human-centered way. My work is about building a clear, practical and comprehensive framework to evaluate how these models perform across different fields and situations.
